Beast Wars Neo was a television series that aired in Japan in 1999, in support of the toyline of the same name. It directly follows Beast Wars II. The show follows the adventures of a crew of Maximals, commanded by Big Convoy, as they compete with Magmatron's evil Predacons to collect the Angolmois energy capsules, scattered at the end of Beast Wars II.

The film revolves around the Maximals, led by Lio Convoy; the Predacons, led by Galvatron; and a mysterious device that has crashed on Planet Gaia (a future version of Earth), leading to the arrival of a legendary Maximal warrior, and the protagonist of the original Beast Wars series, Beast Convoy (Optimus Primal). After an incident at Mount Fuji unearths the slumbering Dragotron, Demon Emperor of the Predacons, his minions known as the Four Oni subsequently awaken and seek to restore their unconscious master to full power. To do so, they must obtain five mystical items known as the Legendiscs, which have been hidden away. However, in response to their awakening, two three-member teams of Autobot combiners, each belonging to a subgroup called the Swordbots, have likewise been summoned to counter this new Predacon threat. Answering the call of two human boys, the Swordbot Samurai Team comes to aid Isami Tatewaki, and the Swordbot Shinobi Team teams up with Tobio Fuuma. The two teams use their combination abilities to battle the Predacons, and recruit both Isami and Tobio to help them in their fight. And with the guidance of Optimus Prime, both teams must find all of the remaining Legendiscs—which are located in various points in time throughout history - so as to keep them safe from the Predacons. It has been 10 years since the fateful battle with Unicron. Many of the Decepticons who fought in the battle against Unicron have joined forces with the Autobos to mine for Energon, an alternate energy source. But a new source of evil has a risen, Alpha Q who plans to steal the Energon from the Autobots with the help of Scorponok and the Terrorcons.
