Paris, France, during the First World War. While thousands of soldiers die every day on the battlefields, Henri Landru, a seemingly respectable furniture dealer, married and father of four children, relentlessly feeds his own sinister factory of death.

In the middle of his life, Paul Gompitz from Rostock makes the decision to travel to Syracuse in Sicily. He is driven to follow in the footsteps of the poet Johann Gottlieb Seume. But: Paul lives in the GDR, behind the most annoying border in the world. His plan is impossible by legal means. So he has to prepare an escape.

Facing expulsion from college over a misunderstanding, a bipolar student indulges his misery at a strip club where he befriends a gorgeous, intelligent, outrageous woman and they hatch a madcap scheme to prove his innocence.

In short, the main meaning of the film is that those who are engaged in idle work actually consider themselves to be concerned with serious, vital issues.
