John Cooper, the biggest Hollywood star of his generation, partied away his career and vanished from the public eye. Years later, a documentary crew finds him living on the couch of his biggest fan in a tiny one bedroom apartment, and captures his moronic attempts to rebuild his career from scratch.

The film tells, through the stories of four characters whose lives, in different forms and manners, are either changed or endangered by shoes, an object symbolizing desire par excellence, what we are willing to do to find our identity in the world, how far we go to be loved and accepted. It narrates a world where everyone desires what they don't have, where everyone wants to be what they are not.
Alex Hartwell is a government tax auditor sent to investigate Turnbull Chemical's books. Arriving on the heels of a rowdy convention, Alex is forced to take a room at the seedy Michelle Apartments. As Alex's audit uncovers financial improprieties by day, after hours he finds himself drawn into a vortex of libidinous intrigue involving the predatory, chain-smoking femme fatale, Madeleine, and her menacing, ex-convict husband Dean.
Maude, an actress, grows bitter as she loses another job to her nemesis Catherine Perry, whose popularity is growing amongst the commercial and television auditioning circuit. To get her mind off things, Maude drinks a bunch and goes on a date she set up online (and nearly forgot about), though her problems only become more apparent over the course of her evening.
