The life of a successful radiologist spirals out of control when she sees the spitting image of herself driving down a London street. While attempting to uncover who the imposter could be, she stumbles into a terrifying mystery that her family and closest friends are somehow involved in, leaving her with no one to trust.

12-year-old Jewish girl Dinka studies at Machon (Jewish Orthodox orphanage). Lone middle-aged Hana, the Machon headmistress, exerts her best efforts to educate girls in the spirit of Jewish tradition and to protect them from the temptations of the outside world. Once Dinka has watched a boring B-movie on TV and felt in love with Hollywood actor David Travis, a muscular, handsome moustachette. She decides to marry him by the Talmudic rules and writes letters to Hollywood.

A bohemian painter named Artist and a guitarist named James meet at a concert and have an instant connection. They start a philosophical discussion at her apartment, but they are interrupted by strange occurrences which reveal they are no longer in reality but an ominous dream world. Both Artist and James are confronted by characters and situations from their past, and they must work together to put the memory pieces together and escape to reality, if they can.

Two friends fall in love with the same girl and end up in a situation that can only make everyone unhappy. In Forget America, it is also reinforced by the setting, a small East German town. Life in Aschleben is difficult enough in itself for David, who would like to be a famous photographer, for Benno, who desperately wants to open an American road cruiser store in his dreary hometown, and for Anna, who dreams of a career as an actress, but it is their feelings for each other that rob them of practically any chance of a little happiness.
