Young Masters: Wild Wind

In the town of San Antonio in Guerrero, Mexico, lives my mother, Amelia, a 60-year-old woman who leads a quiet life on her ranch, tending to the land and her husband. With the arrival of Holy Week, she is joined by my niece, Rosario, her granddaughter, whom she teaches about religious traditions. Their encounter quietly evokes questions about the role of women in my town. Despite the generational differences, they see themselves reflected in each other and share a deep desire to transform our destinies.

This feature documentary examines the destruction of the tundra barrens of northern Canada for mineral mining, including that of Canadian diamonds. Many species have been threatened by this development, including the caribou and the Eskimo Curlew, a bird that flew the sky in thousands which is now nearly extinct. This film makes a compelling case for planned conservation in one of the last unspoiled wilderness regions left in the world.

THE PERFUMED GARDEN is an exploration of the myths and realities of sensuality and sexuality in Arab society, a world of taboos and of erotic literature. Through interviews with men and women of all ages, classes, and sexual orientation, the film lifts a corner of the veil that usually shrouds discussion of this subject in the Arab world. Made by an Algerian-French woman director, the film begins by looking at the record of a more permissive history, and ends with the experiences of contemporary lovers from mixed backgrounds. It examines the personal issues raised by the desire for pleasure, amidst societal pressures for chastity and virginity. The film discusses pre-marital sex, courtship and marriage, familial pressures, private vs. public spaces, social taboos (and the desire to break them), and issues of language.

Using Switzerland as a point of departure, where wolves have returned in the very recent past, this documentary sheds light on the wolf situation in Austria, eastern Germany, Poland, Bulgaria, and even Minnesota, where freely roaming packs of wolves are more common sight.

In France, as in the United States, an ideological divide is widening between girls and boys: "Young women born between 1995 and 2010 are hyper-progressive, while men of the same age are hyper-conservative," according to Alice Evans, a researcher at Stanford University. "Tens of millions of people who live in the same cities, work in the same places, attend the same classrooms, and even live in the same houses no longer share the same views. This is unprecedented. Generation Z is actually two generations, not one."
