Three lives of three young people intersect over the course of one summer. A rich student and a young working-class man accidentally destroy a diner when their impromptu road race takes a disastrous turn. Ordered by a judge to spend the summer repairing the building, they find themselves becoming rivals for the affections of the owner's daughter.

Bullied at school and ignored and abused at home by his indifferent mother and older brother, Billy Casper, a 15-year-old working-class Yorkshire boy, tames and trains his pet kestrel falcon whom he names Kes. Helped and encouraged by his English teacher and his fellow students, Billy finally finds a positive purpose to his unhappy existence.

In the near future where civil war is the order of the day and strange diseases are devastating, a boy lives alone in the house that his parents left him. Away from the surrounding chaos, he survives day by day from what the countryside gives him, until one day a strange girl interrupts her nighttime sleep, altering her daily life.
