As children in the loving Ekdahl family, Fanny and Alexander enjoy a happy life with their parents, who run a theater company. After their father dies unexpectedly, however, the siblings end up in a joyless home when their mother, Emilie, marries a stern bishop. The bleak situation gradually grows worse as the bishop becomes more controlling, but dedicated relatives make a valiant attempt to aid Emilie, Fanny and Alexander.

Nina, mid 20’s, is a visual artist whose art depicts the feminine beauty of all women but struggles with self-identity as a multicultural millennial woman. While flipping through social media her frustration leads her to brood over old photos of complex stages in her life. She’s inspired to create a portrait that represents her personal voyage to self confidence and finally see her beautiful self.

Helen lives in London with her father and her kids. John, her husband, is an aid-worker in Eastern Europe. He has been gone many months. Helen is desperately anxious that he should come home. Thus begins, a four-day Odyssey: Grandpa and the kids must come to terms with Helen's death; John must travel across a war-torn land as he tries to reach home; and Helen must stand helplessly observing her own existence as it comes back to haunt her - until at last she is reconciled with John, and thus released.

This not only earns him a beating, but also a charge for a crime he did not commit. Fortunately, he manages to flee to Africa, where he finds shelter with a friend as a big game hunter. But his heart soon pulls him back home.
