Northern Irishwoman Helen Cuffe (Julie Christie) is overwhelmed with sadness when her husband is killed by the Irish Republican Army. She and her teen son, Jack (Frank MacCusker), then move to a tiny town and start life anew. There, Helen meets a mysterious American man named Roger Hawthorne (Donald Sutherland), who is in the area to refurbish an old train station. A romance slowly blossoms between Roger and Helen, but Jack then gets involved with a violent political group, and tragedy looms.

France, beginning of World War II. Hélène Studler is a nun who has been dedicated to the care of orphans and the abandoned people. But the times have changed, the people are living a whole revolt, the Germansoldiers have entered their city and the reality that now faces far exceeds the harshness to which they are accustomed: Hélène discovers that near her locality, the Nazis have installed a concentration camp. Along with some people of the city, several of her Sisters Daughters of Charity plot a whole plan to free the captives from their tragic end.

An unemployed construction worker heading out west stops at a remote farm in the desert to get water when his car overheats. The farm is being worked by a group of East European Catholic nuns, headed by the strict mother superior, who believes the man has been sent by God to build a much needed church in the desert.

A being from a different plane decides to come down on earth to see how human beings are living; over there he meets a evil man who try to manipulate him to his personal benefit. The angel comes to Tomar to live with the people of the earth and lives among human beings, gets to know the magician Solomon who discovers that Tomar has a magical eye and convinces him to work with him, Solomon covets in his wife's sister Jasmine and rapes her, Solomon exploits that Tomar does not have His fingerprints persuade him to steal the treasury of the hotel where Solomon and Tomar present with them, but they fail to monitor the police for them.
