1547. Fernando de Gama, a young "Soldier of Fortune" from Portugal, set sail for the Orient in an effort to find a man who murdered his father and, with luck, like many of their compatriots, to make his fortune. A vicious storm in the Indian Ocean almost ended his plans when he was on the ship sank. The sole survivor, he was washed up on a tropical beach only to be captured by Arab slavers and taken to Ayutthaya in the kingdom of Siam, where he was offered for sale as a slave.

August 1914. Europe has mobilised. The Imperial German Army has executed its Schlieffen Plan, has ploughed through Belgium, and is now deep in France. The British Expeditionary Force is seeing its first action against the Germans. Skirmishes in open countryside are common, and both sides are still learning how a modern war could and should be fought. Two soldiers, one English, one German, both with lives and lovers at home they would rather not have left, find themselves facing each other, alone. Alone, except for the French girl, Françoise…

Officer Blanca Bravo arrives in Juarez, Mexico — a grim nexus of corporate colonialism and sexual tourism — to investigate a rash of killings targeting female migrant workers. But with no help from the locals, bringing the responsible parties to justice becomes a frustrating exercise. As Bravo rails against indifference and local corruption, she finds herself on a collision course with Mickey Santos, a Mexican mogul with a taste for young prostitutes.
