For eons, light and dark have fought ceaselessly for dominion over the world. Whispers echo of a Dark Lord whose insidious grip on the realm is marked by insatiable lust, twisted jealousy, ravenous greed, unrelenting vanity, and possessive manipulation. A group of adventurers rose to face this threat with hidden wishes of secrets and shadows untold.

6th-grader Terkel begins experiencing a streak of bad luck after sitting on a black spider. His teacher dies and is replaced by the strange Justin. At home, Terkel's Uncle Stewart erupts in sporadic fits of rage, and at school Terkel is bullied by two boys after they learn that fat Doris likes him. On a school camping trip, Terkel begins receiving death threats and must figure out who wants to kill him.

When Imperial China calls one man from every family to defend the empire from invading Huns, a young woman disguises herself as a soldier to take her ailing father’s place. Facing ruthless invaders, brutal training, and the risk of execution if discovered, she must decide who she truly is— and what she’s willing to fight for.

In 1480, or thereabouts, as Princess Blanche prepares to unite with the handsome prince of a neighboring kingdom, her father decides to marry her to Melchior, his coarse army commander whom she barely knows. Devastated, she asks for the help of her godmother, who reveals that she is in possession of a mysterious “skin” which, once worn, will allow Blanche to become a man and thus get to know her fiancé incognito.
