Ned Rivers loses his ranch to the railroad and returns to prospecting. In the wild he meets and befriends Jessie who has been wandering in the mountains since her father died. They take care of an orphaned grizzly cub, Goldy, a "Golden Bear," whose mother has been killed by a circus owner looking for a new circus attraction. When the circus owner, Boss Cooperman, arrives Ned and Jessie try to save her with the help of new friends.

A magician in a carnival--who actually can read minds and levitate people and objects--works with a superintelligent chimp named Alex, who can also talk. The magician and the chimp soon become the stars of the carnival, drawing in big crowds. However, the wild-animal trainer, who has been displaced by the team as the carnival's top act, decides to kidnap Alex and sell him to a medical laboratory for experimentation, thereby getting rid of his competition.

Pechudo is a magnificent jet-black stallion who epitomizes the adjective, "freedom." Running wild in Mexico, Pechudo and his running mates are constantly being sought out and captured by ranchers. Time and again, however, Pechudo would elude capture, then return and seek out his fellow mustangs and free them, and the adventure would repeat itself.
