The first film adaptation, and most faithful, of Noel Coward's 1929 operetta Bitter Sweet. This tells the story of Sarah Linden's romance, the tale begins with Sarah, now older, reminiscing about her first love. As a young girl Sarah falls in love with Carl, a musician, and runs off with him to Vienna. They are happily wed and Carl earns a living conducting a small orchestra. Enter a certain Captain who sets his eye on Sarah and proceeds to shower her with his attentions, much to her dismay.
Investigator reporter Abbey Fisher always thought she wanted the traditional American Dream: a husband and children of her own. When life and fertility stand in her way, Fisher (played by Robyn Lively) leverages her journalism know-how and uncovers the rapidly growing American sex trade preying on children and youth. Fisher and her husband come to know Bethany (Lori Beth (Edgeman) Sikes), a twelve year old victim of pernicious trafficking. As Bethany learns and grows, so do the Fishers as they take the battle against circumstances and government to protect others from Bethany's experiences.

The naive 18 year old Dobrila leaves her little Serbian village to travel to Hamburg, Germany, where her boyfriend lives. The trip is not easy. Finally in Hamburg she has to realize her boyfriend is not very interested in a relationship. She doesn't tell him she's pregnant and starts on her way home to Serbia, which turns out to be even more exhausting.
