Arfon spent a week on the Great Central Railway finding out everything a trainee footplate member needs to know. Starting at the bottom, just as a real trainee would have done on BR, Arfon first becomes a cleaner then gradually progresses up the ladder with ex-Fireman Ray Martin teaching him the art of firing. Ex-BR Driver Bill Gwilt then takes over to explain how to oil and prepare the loco followed by how to drive. Arfon then takes the controls of Clun Castle in charge of a seven coach “express” running from Loughborough Central to Rothley. If you have ever wondered how a steam engine works or how they are maintained or driven, this best selling video is for you.

Nearly 200 years ago, the train revolutionized our lives. It redrew the maps of states and nations, and changed concepts of distance and time like no other invention before. What visionaries imagined the development of the railroad? How did we get from the first chugging locomotives to the smooth giants of speed we see today? How does France's extensive rail network keep running smoothly, 24/7?

Explore a living piece of the American West deep in the San Juan Mountains of southwest Colorado. The Durango and Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad traverses forty-five miles of the most rugged and beautiful country in North America. It attracts hundreds of thousands of riders annually and has often served as a Hollywood movie set. This program begins with a tour of the roundhouse, shops, and turntable as classic D&RGW steam locomotives are readied for their runs. Enjoy a front-row seat to this incredible scenic line from the cab of a former White Pass and Yukon diesel. Ride with the crew on an Alco K-28 steam engine and watch these cherished "sport models" participate in fall and winter photo excursions. As a bonus, we have included rare footage of the D&SNG hauling logs for a wintertime fire mitigation project with the Colorado State Forest Service. This is your ticket to explore a true American treasure!

This is the last working narrow gauge steam railway in China. Built 70 years ago to haul coal out of the valley, the 19 km line has evolved to be the main source of transport in the valley carrying children to school, workers to their jobs and pigs to market; all fighting for space in the train's small, unglazed carriages. Now the railway is at a critical point. The mine has shut down and the villagers are fighting to keep the line - and its aging steam locomotives - running. Already the villagers have to make replacement parts by hand. When the boiler goes they face catastrophe. Too large to fabricate themselves, they search far and wide for a company to make a new boiler for them. But even if they can find a new boiler, how can they get it to Jiayang Valley? At a time when attention is focused on China's great leaps in technology, on its maglev and bullet trains, Little Train takes viewers on a journey to the quiet backwaters that are still home to half of China’s population.
