In the first entry in the popular Hazards of Helen series, Helen, the night telegraph operator at Lone Point, relieves Benton, the day operator, several hours ahead of time, because he is caring for his sick child. King Pausole is known for his relaxed rule and having a different wife for every day of the year. Princess Aline, the king's favorite, leaves the kingdom with Giglio, a modern, adventurous pilot, disrupting the kingdom's orderly hedonism. The king abandons his daily duties to hunt for his daughter, bringing him into contact with a world outside his own pampered experience.

Naïve young Englishman, Silas P. Binns inherits a substantial business in Chicago. Unaware of the city's reputation for rampant organized crime during the Prohibition era, Silas arrives in America with idealistic expectations. Upon his arrival, he finds himself inadvertently caught in the middle of a fierce and dangerous turf war between rival gangster factions. The humor of the film stems from Silas's "innocent" and oblivious nature as he navigates the violent underworld of Chicago, often mistaking life-threatening situations for ordinary business or social interactions.
