David Malone’s 3-part series takes a fresh look at how the universe was formed, from a scientific and theological point of view. TESTING GOD re-examines the relationship between science and religion and asks: is science’s claim to victory premature?
This first part in the series examines whether science has foreclosed on the possibility of a creator God and, if not, whether it can. The answer on both counts is no. Science is actually having to grapple with the fact that our universe, far from being explicable as a logical or mathematical necessity, is a highly unlikely place. Is this evidence that the laws of nature are a product of design? If so, surely this is indisputable evidence for God. The alternative explanation, that ours is one of an infinite number of universes, poses more problems for science than it solves.
The second programme asks what piece of work is a man? Is the overwhelming evidence that we are a product of evolution final evidence that God does not exist? Does this in turn mean that we are little more than beasts, that morality and spirituality are mere illusions? On all counts, the answer is no. Programme 2 shows that a god who wanted his creations to have free-will - and therefore moral responsibility - would have to have used a process like evolution. The death of the "argument by design" is not the death of god.
The final programme looks at the human brain and the human mind. Are our minds based purely on binary logic, or is there something irrational - something subjective - at the root of reason? We look at ideas in physics, neurology and psychology and suggest that, whatever you think about the existence of God, the ability to believe is a crucial part of living in a fundamentally uncertain world. If we deny this in a quest for rational "certainty", might we be denying the very thing that makes us human?

Tales of the Unexpected is a new strand of provocative, confronting and thoroughly entertaining science documentaries. Each episode reveals a fascinating, sometimes awkward, and frequently unsettling world where peculiar ideas are put to the test. Come with us to where nothing is quite as it seems, where diseases are diagnosed by palm-readers, where paternity uncertainty drives the mating game, and where breasts are a toxic health hazard.
Stephen Hawking’s Science of the Future investigates the very latest game changing innovations. Each episode takes one area of progress and sends five top scientists out to actively test the inventions and breakthroughs that are driving it. The team explore human upgrades, the virtual world, bio-mimicry, high-tech emergency responses, and more. Featuring a wide range of examples, from advanced robotics and breathtaking digital actors, to cutting edge smart homes and electronic brain stimulation, the series reveals how science is delivering astonishing improvements to all our lives. Using the evidence they gather, the team reveals the year when each innovation will be rolled out for us all to benefit from, and Hawking then draws out his own uniquely insightful predictions about what our world will be like in the years to come.
From strange abductions, to mutated species, to bizarre occurrences, there are some phenomena that science cannot - or will not - explain. This summer Science Channel unveils some of these shocking and mind-boggling cases from around the world in the world premiere series THE UNEXPLAINED FILES. From mysterious disappearances and UFO encounters, to unidentified fanged predators and reported curses, THE UNEXPLAINED FILES investigates actual, inexplicable occurrences that have confounded scientists and inspired legends. Science Channel invites viewers on a mystifying journey that will challenge disbelief with THE UNEXPLAINED FILES.
What would we be without mucus? Can we live on water? How much does life weigh? Finding out the answers is the aim of ARTE's new science show. In a nod to Douglas Adams's "Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy", where the figure 42 is the ultimate answer to all questions, 42 tries to provide the answers.
Geologist Iain Stewart explain in three stages of natural history the crucial interaction of our very planet's physiology and its unique wildlife. Biological evolution is largely driven bu adaptation to conditions such as climate, soil and irrigation, but biotopes were also shaped by wildlife changing earth's surface and climate significantly, even disregarding human activity.
