When the Russians surround the city of Marioepol, thousands of residents from the city entrench themselves in the basements of the Azov steel mill. A reconstruction of the 82 dark days of recent Ukrainian history, in which courage, creativity and tolerance help them survive.

When Russian troops invade Ukraine in February 2022, the port city of Marioepol is one of the first to be completely surrounded. The inhabitants are overtaken by the speed of the attack and the heavy bombing. Their lives in the bustling industrial city come to a halt abruptly. The Russians offer a 'safe' way out to Russia, but most residents refuse. Many take refuge in the Azovstal site, one of the largest steel mills in Europe, where dozens of Cold War bunkers are hidden.

Under the Azovstal factory in Marioepol, hundreds of people are hiding in old nuclear bunkers for Russian bombing. The conditions are miserable: no light, water, privacy and less and less food. An improvised society of young and old, rich and poor is created, with pets. Tensions are mounting. Who takes care of the other - and who especially takes care of themselves? Many survive with creativity and courage. But when supplies run out, the Ukrainian army sets up an airlift.

The Azovstal factory is continuously bombarded by Russian troops. For the people in the bunkers, the situation is getting heavier and more hopeless. After 82 days, the Ukrainian army command decides to capitulate. Citizens are evacuated to a safe area via a corridor. The military surrender, are disarmed and taken to Russian camps as prisoners of war. In the months that followed, many were released through prisoner exchanges and told about the harsh conditions during the siege and imprisonment.

The Russian army has no shortage of weapons despite sanctions: With an arsenal mixing old Soviet stocks and modern hypersonic weapons, the country could strike Europe in minutes. An opaque network of spies, shell companies and oligarchs ensures its war capacity through the arms trade, technology theft and state-organized policy of terror.
