Chroniques d'En Haut

"The Climbers" is a six-part documentary series tracing the history of mountaineering. Directed by Chris Bonington and Richard Else, it was produced by the BBC and broadcast in 1992. The series recounts the evolution of mountaineering and the traditions of climbers in Great Britain and on the European continent: the former developed a free climbing technique, while the latter used aids such as keys, pitons, and drills to ascend otherwise inaccessible routes. The program includes archive footage of the pioneers of the sport, from the emergence of free climbing as a distinct discipline in the late 1970s and 1980s to the advent of competitions.

In beautifully crafted episodes, presenter Ben Fogle embarks on a once-in-a-lifetime journey to understand China - to see its most staggering sights, go beyond the stereotypes and discover its true identity. Ben delves into an epic 3000-year tale of how China has got to where it is today - how centuries of Imperial rule gave way to Communist revolution under Chairman Mao and the breakneck economic transformation as the state capitalist China of recent years has emerged. Mixing both the experiences from the people themselves, and a tour of this magnificent region Ben takes the temperature of a country now at the very centre of humanity in the 21st century. So why and how has contemporary China become so important to all our lives?

Although high mountain ranges occupy only a small part of the Earth, they are crucial to life on the planet. As the “water towers of the world,” they supply over two-thirds of global freshwater resources and provide sanctuary for endangered species. This series journeys across Europe’s spectacular mountain landscapes, revealing how these remote regions have shaped humanity’s past and continue to influence its future. Through powerful personal stories and breathtaking scenery, it shows how mountain communities are adapting to change—using innovation to preserve ancient traditions, from drone-guided reindeer herding in Norway to sled dogs assisting hikers in the Italian Alps—while the return of the bearded vulture to Spain offers hope for the future of these fragile environments.

Three years in the making, the series reveals how wildlife is adapting as climate change intensifies and extreme weather reshapes the planet. From hurricanes, floods, droughts and wildfires to melting Arctic ice, animals across the globe face an unprecedented fight for survival. Through dramatic, character-led storytelling, the series follows remarkable species including polar bears, chimpanzees, Californian sea otters and Caribbean flamingos, showcasing both the ferocity of Earth's forces and the extraordinary resilience and ingenuity of the natural world.
