God strikes a wager with the Devil: if just one person can convince him that the world is worth saving, he'll spare humanity from destruction, if not, God will scrap all of creation and start over. The Devil is allowed to choose the candidate, and true to form, he picks the…

Somewhere after those first heady days in the Garden of Eden, mankind jumped onto a slippery slope of bad behavior, making one wrong moral choice after another. Small wonder, then, that God's disappointed and considering destroying the whole thing. But he has a soft spot for his failed experiment and decides to give it one last shot: If he can find one person to convince him the universe is worth saving, he will. Just like that. And being a sporting deity, he lets the Devil chose, and so he does: Bob Alman, an autoworker whose goal in life seems to be to just sliding through. And never has there been a more unlikely, or more reluctant, person for the job. Fear convinces Bob to accept the mission, but God's vague instructions are no help. And the Devil, who figures he only has one soul to focus on now, is a formidable obstacle. On the job or at home with his family, Bob is forever changed. How can you watch a hockey game when the fate of the world is in your hands?
Andy is proud that his father can talk to God and he attempts to brag about it to his friends. But when they want to actually see it, he asks his father if he can talk to God in front of his friends. Bob agrees, but when he fails to get God to show up, Andy decides to run away. Will Bob be able to find Andy before something bad happens to him, and what about God who ignored Bob's attempts to speak with him?
Bob doesn't take the Devil seriously, so to get back at Bob, the devil poses as a teenager and begins to court Bob's daughter Megan.
After God forgets the Devil's birthday, the Devil decides to go back to hell and take all the world's evil to show God how much he really needs him. Up in the world, Bob is realizing how everyone is much too nice, which eventually gets on Bob's nerves. So, he launches on a quest to reunite God and the Devil as friends so the Devil returns the world's evil.
God wants Bob to do something about his adulterous neighbor, which God is frustrated about because it's definitely a sin. Bob reluctantly accepts the assignment, but soon realizes that things are going to go much different than he expected.
After a series of fortunate events that prevented Bob's death, Bob is convinced that his role as God's messenger has granted him the gift of invincibility. All the while, the Devil is frustrated because God never has time for him anymore and he feels that he's being ignored, which once again causes the Devil and Bob's paths to cross.
Bob finds himself being put into a mental institution after his behavior while performing a task for God raises questions about his health. With Bob out of the way, the Devil decides to try to seduce Bob's wife in order to mess with Bob even more, but will Bob be able to prove that he's not insane before the Devil's plan succeeds?
God is feeling lonely because he doesn't really have much of a social life (due to being God) so he decides to try to live life as a human being; he gets a job as an auto worker at the plant where Bob works.
Bob finds the Devil's palm pilot after he misplaces it and he realizes that the next day's sports scores are on it. Bob decides to exploit what he found and use it for gambling. He considers it a blessing when it leads to a fortune; however, the Devil realizes what Bob is doing and he thinks he can use it to his advantage.
God is disgusted with how much sex is shown on television and he decides to get Bob to go to Hollywood to get them to limit the amount of sex that can be on television. Bob is reluctant, but he soon comes to his senses when he realizes Andy has seen something he shouldn't, but will he be capable of opposing one of the most powerful people in the world alone?
Bob's father is dying though he doesn't care because his father was always abusive during his life. However, Bob cannot help but wonder if he will go to heaven or hell after he perishes, which causes Bob to go on a journey that may help him understand more about his father than he ever thought he would know.
God's girlfriend walks back into his life after leaving him because he was always so busy; Bob attempts to help him win her heart back, but will God be capable of watching over the world and courting his girlfriend without complications?
After discovering a swear word scrolled on Andy's lunchbox, Bob decides that enough is enough and he forms a vigilante group that will help him fight against the evils of society, but will Bob still manage to perform the tasks God has in store for him, or will all the exposure get to Bob’s head?
