Murder by the Lake is a German-Austrian TV crime series that has been produced since 2014 by Rowboat Film- und Fernsehproduktion and Graf Filmproduktion in cooperation with the German television broadcaster ZDF and the Austrian television broadcaster ORF. The series is filmed and set in the adjacent towns of Bregenz, Austria, and Lindau, Germany, which are both located on the southeastern shore of Lake Constance.

The story of humanity is told through the lens of the world's oceans. Focusing on the Atlantic, Pacific and Indian Oceans, the series explores how these vast bodies of water have shaped migration, trade, cultural exchange and the rise of civilizations for thousands of years. Ocean currents, tides and monsoon systems have influenced not only life along the coasts but also societies, economies and the global climate. Stunning natural imagery and the latest scientific insights offer a sweeping perspective on the enduring relationship between people and the sea.

Along the U.S. East Coast, through the Great Lakes and down the Mississippi to Florida, the 10,000-kilometre Great Loop reveals vibrant cultures, historic engineering and remarkable wildlife, from blues musicians to turtles, alligators and dolphins. This extraordinary network of waterways also highlights the urgent need to protect fragile aquatic ecosystems.

Filmed during Scotland’s busy summer season in August 2026, the series follows people who live and work along this remarkable coastline as they welcome visitors from near and far, balancing thriving local businesses with the responsibility of preserving the history, character and natural beauty of the places they are proud to call home. From the ancient woodlands and shifting dune forests of Tentsmuir, where the North Sea continues to add to the shoreline, to the puffin colonies of the Isle of May National Nature Reserve and the dolphin-rich waters of the Moray Firth, cameras will capture the landscapes and wildlife that make this golden coast such a treasure.

Heligoland is a place of longing and a tourist magnet. Every year, several hundred thousand visitors arrive on Germany's only deep-sea island on ferries or “Börte boats” - in the hope of slowing down. But the first impression is easily deceptive, because behind the scenes of the supposedly sleepy idyll there is a lot of activity. On just one square kilometer, Helgoland is home to its own cosmos of institutions and trades that are otherwise only known from larger cities. Here people tackle things and work hard. For one season, the series follows key figures, characters and enablers who keep life on the island going.
