The Hairy Bikers traverse the infamous Route 66, serving up plenty of delicious food along the way.

In small-town America, the bikers enjoy some retro roadside spectacles that provide entertainment and intrigue, including the huge fibreglass figures known as "muffler men". Dave and Si then enjoy a championship-winning apple pie and learn how Route 66 entered American folklore by connecting small-town America from east to west and enabling it to prosper.

On the second leg of their Route 66 adventure, Dave and Si travel through three states to discover what lies beneath the legend of this iconic road.

Dave and Si are on the trail of Oklahoma's famous beef. In Oklahoma City a classic T Bone steak is followed by a visit to the city's Vietnamese community, to knock up Vietnam's beefy national dish: Pho.

Dave and Si ride from Texas into New Mexico, exploring the small independently owned restaurants and food producers and cooking carnitas with mac and cheese and a grown-up chilli chocolate pie.

The bikers cross the state of Arizona in search of the Wild West. They are invited to a traditional Navajo barbecue where a sheep is butchered, grilled and eaten alongside some traditional fry bread.

On the last leg of their Route 66 odyssey, the bikers make a small detour to the city of light, Las Vegas, to learn how to make the best-mashed potato in the world.

How did something so fundamental as food, go so fundamentally wrong? Instead of nourishing us, what we eat and the way we produce it threaten the air we breathe, the water we drink and the dirt under our feet. And yet, too much 'food' television focuses on celebrity chefs and cooking competitions and not enough on where our food comes from and the impact it has on our planet, our country, our bodies, and our souls. Food Forward opens the door into a new world of possibility, where pioneers and visionaries are creating viable alternatives to the pressing social and environmental impacts of our industrial food system. Across the country, a vanguard of food rebels--farmers, chefs, fishermen, teachers, scientists, and entrepreneurs--are creating inspired, but practical solutions that are nourishing us and the planet. These are stories America needs to hear. This is Food Forward.
