Documentary
A documentary series on the machines of war, in particular the machines of the 20th century. Covers such diverse topics as tanks, bombs, espionage equipment, nuclear weapons and aircraft.
WWI was the first truly mechanized war. All sides began with strategies from the Napoleonic Wars, resulting in troops being unprepared for the destructive new technologies such as Maxim machine gun and fast-firing artillery.
The North African desert campaign of World War II gave rise to the Desert Rats. Machines in this campaign were the Matilda II tank, Rolls Royce armored car, the Panzer III, 88mm anti-tank gun and the American M3 Grant tank.
n WWII, tanks, ships, and aircraft were well known, but there was also a whole fleet of lesser known vehicles such as the Jeep, the amphibious DUKW and a legendary American GI and his Harley motorbike.
In WWI, the Corps of Royal Engineers invented the Geophone, a device to detect enemy tunnelers. In WWII, they drove converted tanks that created bridges and cleared minefields, and made mobile robots that defused bombs.
In any war, information is key. Examine the machines used to capture, transmit, and analyze vital combat information, featuring SOE agents and their equipment, spies stealing Royal Navy blueprints, and a daring submarine mission.
Examine machines on the ground that would have fought in a nuclear war, featuring, amongst others, the 1961 tank standoff at Checkpoint Charlie in Berlin when Soviet T-54 tanks faced off with American M-48 Patton tanks.
The Vietnam War. The Americans used their abundance of jet fighters, helicopters, and river patrol boats to try and stop the continuous stream of supplies and North Vietnamese fighters coming down the trail.
The Cold War. East and West developed weapons that could destroy the world. Examine the origins of the Arms Race and the first use of nuclear weapons that ended World War II, featuring, amongst others, the Titan II Intercontinental Ballistic Missile and the Corona spy satellite.

This is your chance to reach out and touch the past! Just as a forensic anthropologist analyses bones, and a historian deciphers ancient texts, we now have the technology to "read" the buildings, ruins and landscapes where history was made. The series, presented by Dallas Campbell, teams Steve Burrows (pictured), the brains behind the Bird’s Nest Stadium in Beijing, with a team of pioneering laser scanning experts from the Centre for Advanced Spatial Technologies to unlock the secrets of the world’s greatest engineering and cultural achievements. Locations include the Colosseum, Petra, Machu Picchu, St. Paul’s Cathedral, the Pyramids and Jerusalem.
The Russian army has no shortage of weapons despite sanctions: With an arsenal mixing old Soviet stocks and modern hypersonic weapons, the country could strike Europe in minutes. An opaque network of spies, shell companies and oligarchs ensures its war capacity through the arms trade, technology theft and state-organized policy of terror.
It is 2014 and the machines have not taken over…yet. The newest, most technologically advanced series from H2™, Rise of the Machines, reveals how the inventions behind the world’s most extreme machines have enabled them to evolve beyond humanity’s wildest imagination. This visually stunning series uses mind-blowing CGI animations to reveal the extraordinary engineering at the heart of the world’s most extreme machines. From the world’s biggest mega truck to the world’s fastest train to a revolutionary heavy lift ship, ground breaking CGI animation explodes the machines apart to reveal the ingenious inventions hidden under their skin that enables the teams who drive, fly and sail them to be at the top of their game. This series takes us inside these machines in close up detail and explores what helps these elite ships, trucks, trains and aircrafts rise above all others.
At the end of the 16th century, Dutch subjects revolted against legitimate Spanish rule. What starts with the discontent of a minority grows into a war that will last more than a lifetime. From Groningen to Brussels, from Den Briel to Groenlo, the battle erupts everywhere. And often that struggle has a strangely modern appearance. Terrorism, propaganda, executions, radicalization, shock and awe; all themes that can easily be found in the war that was fought from 1568 to 1648. In a 7-part television series, the NTR will bring the stories about the 80-year war that can be found all over the country from September 28, every Friday at 9.05 pm on NPO 2. And Hans Goedkoop oversees the battlefield with experts.
