On a graduation trip to sunny Spain, Layla struggles with the pressure of her art school admissions, while Naomi is haunted by calls from her mother about her future plans. Their growing bond culminates in a drunken kiss that unleashes unexpected feelings.

In 1908, eighth grader Alma Richards quits school to work as a ranch hand. A chance meeting with a professor motivates him to resume his education, leading him to compete in high jump at the Stockholm Olympics and win a gold medal.

The story revolves around the Dinky Doos, a provincial musical troupe living from hand to mouth.
